Fixing cold rooms and uneven heating

Uneven heating is almost always a delivery problem: not enough warm air reaches the room, or the room loses heat faster than it's supplied.

Why some rooms stay cold

Uneven heating is almost always a delivery problem: not enough warm air reaches the room, or the room loses heat faster than it's supplied. Turning the thermostat up rarely fixes it.

Rooms over garages, rooms at the end of long duct runs, bonus rooms and rooms with lots of glass are the usual problem spots.

Warm air rises, so in heating season the upstairs often runs warmer. The opposite pattern, cold upstairs, usually means the upstairs supply ducts run through a cold attic and lose heat before they arrive.

Measuring supply air temperature at upstairs registers versus the furnace outlet shows how much heat the ducts lose.

How a balancing visit works

  1. Measure supply airflow and temperature at each register.
  2. Check static pressure to see whether the duct system is restricted.
  3. Inspect dampers, flex runs and connections.
  4. Adjust dampers and fan speed, then re-measure.
  5. Recommend duct, return or zoning changes only where the measurements show a need.

Things you can try now

  • Open all registers fully, including in warm rooms
  • Move furniture and rugs off returns and supplies
  • Leave interior doors open to test return airflow
  • Set the fan to AUTO instead of ON
  • Replace the filter

When zoning makes sense

Zoning splits one duct system into areas with their own thermostats and motorized dampers. It suits multi-story homes, additions and open plans with big glass walls.

It's a bigger project than a repair, so a good provider will rule out simple fixes first: dampers, leaks and returns.

Cold room FAQs

Will a space heater fix a cold room?

It can warm the room temporarily, but it doesn't fix the cause, and it adds fire risk and electric cost. Keep space heaters away from bedding and curtains and plug them directly into the wall.

Can a bigger furnace fix uneven heating?

Rarely. If ducts can't deliver air to the room, more furnace capacity just overheats the rooms that already get air.
