Thermostat repair for heating systems

If the thermostat screen is blank, the settings keep resetting, or the heater never gets a signal to start, the thermostat or its wiring is the likely problem.

Updated 2026-10-26 · Reviewed against manufacturer guidance and U.S. DOE / CPSC safety information.

Is it the thermostat or the heater?

If the thermostat screen is blank, the settings keep resetting, or the heater never gets a signal to start, the thermostat or its wiring is the likely problem. If the thermostat shows 'Heat On' but nothing happens, look at the heating equipment.

A quick way technicians separate the two is to bypass the thermostat at the equipment. If the heater runs, the thermostat or its wire is at fault.

Location matters as much as the device

A thermostat on an exterior wall, in a drafty hallway, or in afternoon sun can't read the room. It may shut heat off early or run it too long.

Moving the thermostat to an interior wall about five feet off the floor is often a better fix than buying a new one.

Quick checks before calling

  • System switch is on HEAT, fan on AUTO
  • Batteries are fresh (many thermostats warn late)
  • Breaker and furnace power switch are on
  • Schedule or vacation hold isn't overriding you
  • Wi-Fi thermostat app shows the same setpoint as the wall

Thermostat replacement done right

  1. Identify the system type: single-stage, two-stage, heat pump, dual fuel, boiler or line-voltage.
  2. Label every wire before removal.
  3. Confirm a C-wire, or add one, for smart thermostats.
  4. Configure staging, O/B and auxiliary heat settings.
  5. Run a full heat cycle and verify the equipment responds.

Line-voltage thermostats are different

Electric baseboard heaters often use 120V or 240V thermostats, not low-voltage ones. Installing a standard smart thermostat on them is dangerous. Use only models rated for line voltage, installed by a qualified person. More on electric heater repair.

Thermostat FAQs

Can a bad thermostat raise my heating bill?

Yes. A thermostat that misreads the temperature or short cycles the system wastes fuel. So does one with a schedule that heats an empty house.

How long do thermostats last?

Basic digital thermostats often last ten years or more; failures are usually wiring or power related rather than the device wearing out.
